Introducing the Mobile Device Repair Academy at Metro Community College

A Groundbreaking Approach to Tech Education and Workforce Readiness

Metro Community College has taken a significant step towards technological and educational innovation by launching the Mobile Device Repair Academy, a first-of-its-kind program designed to meet the growing demand for skilled mobile device repair technicians. This initiative, developed in partnership with the local business iFixOmaha and the national trade association CTIA, aims to equip students with the necessary skills to excel in the rapidly evolving world of mobile technology.

Starting in March at MCC’s Digital Express library on the Fort Omaha campus, the program offers an intensive five-day boot camp where students learn not only to repair smartphones but also understand how these devices are constructed. This practical, hands-on approach is supplemented by a deep dive into the industry's best practices and standards, primarily through the Wireless Industry Service Excellence (WISE) certification program launched by CTIA in 2019.

The course culminates in a comprehensive eight-week internship that allows students to apply their learning in real-world scenarios, dealing with actual customers and complex repairs. This aspect of the program is designed to bridge the gap between theoretical knowledge and practical application, ensuring that graduates are job-ready and highly competent.

The cost of the program is set at $1,500 per student, with potential scholarships available to make this vital education more accessible. The uniquely structured curriculum is expected not only to enhance the skill set of participants but also to inject highly qualified professionals into the local job market, addressing an acute need for specialized technical expertise in Omaha and beyond.

Jason DeWater, the founder of iFixOmaha, expresses great enthusiasm for this partnership, seeing it as an opportunity to scale his business operations while contributing to community development. By hiring graduates from the academy, iFixOmaha aims to strengthen its technical staff, enhancing its capacity to handle more complex and varied repairs.

This collaborative effort between Metro Community College, iFixOmaha, and CTIA underscores the growing importance of technical education in supporting regional economic growth and innovation. It reflects a shared commitment to developing a skilled workforce that can thrive in a technology-driven landscape.
