Smartphone Battery Dying Too Soon? Try These Tips for Better Battery Life.

Let’s set the scene … You go to make a call as you leave your office and notice your iPhone battery at 3%. So despite not using it all day, your smartphone battery is nearly dead!

Nothing is more annoying than dealing with a phone with low battery life. Does your smartphone battery die before the end of the day?

In this article, we'll explore five tips to get better battery life from your smartphone.

Better Battery Life with Software Updates

One of the easiest ways to keep your battery life stable is to update your phone's software. Software updates are meant to maximize your app usage and minimize the drain on the phone's systems.

Not sure how to update the system? Apple provides clear instructions here.

When you update your system, it's important to back up your files using iCloud or a computer.

Once you've created a backup, you can either use the notification that an update is available or do a manual update by going into the Settings > General tabs and selecting Software Update.

While you are in the Software Update tab, you can also customize your future automatic updates. Updates can take a lot of battery life, so it's best to customize them to an hour when you can be sure you will have a charger available, such as at bedtime.

Updates to software often contain advanced programming that will enable your phone battery to operate more efficiently in the future.

Keeping your (phone) cool!

Technology is creating ever more adaptable smartphones, but even today's high-tech gear has an optimal temperature range. Staying in that range helps extend your battery life.

Your iPhone has a lithium-ion battery. Lithium-ion batteries hold charges better and charge faster than batteries did in the past. They are also able to hold more of a charge while being lighter-weight than previous types of batteries.

A 'comfortable range' for your iPhone's temperature is between 62 and 72 degrees. Temperatures above 95 degrees are hard on your phone and battery and will ultimately result in shutting down the phone until it is cooled off.

Damage that is done to the battery by heat can be permanent.

Temperatures below 62 degrees can also result in a faster discharge of your battery; however, this is not permanent. When your phone is brought up to a warmer temperature, you will find that your battery's charging power is restored to its previous levels.

Charging your phone battery should always take place in a room temperature setting, away from extremes of hot and cold.

Charge It (When Your Battery is Low!)

Lithium-ion batteries are meant to last a long time - being charged up to 1000 times! However, they should be allowed to drain almost all of the way before being charged.

When a lithium-ion battery is charged, chemical reactions can occur that make it more difficult for the battery to obtain and maintain a good charge over time. Optimally, you should charge the battery between 10% and 20% of its normal capacity.

At the same time, lithium-ion batteries should not be allowed to drain to empty as this can also cause a chemical reaction that keeps the battery from fully charging in the future. Over time, the battery life will continue shrinking if you repeatedly allow your phone's battery to go below 10% before charging.

This idea is also true if you are planning on not using your iPhone for some time. You should make sure you store the smartphone with a lower charge rather than a full charge, and you should store it with the power off.

Optimize Your Settings

“One of the easiest ways to preserve your battery's life in any smartphone is to optimize your settings.”

One of the easiest ways to preserve your battery's life in any smartphone is to optimize your settings. Tools in your settings can help you in several ways. One of those settings is using the Auto-Brightness setting. By using less backlight on your phone, you don't drain the battery as fast.

Enabling the 'low power mode' on your phone also allows for battery optimization. Low power mode changes your screen's brightness and reduces background app functions when your phone has less than 20% of its full charge.

When looking at your phone's settings, you can also explore how much battery power an individual app uses. For example, apps that provide location service and background information, such as a map application, can use battery power even when you aren't actively using them. Changing the permissions and the background functions is an effective way of saving battery life.

Apps with high notification rates or being out of a service area can also drain your battery quickly without being actively used. You can change your notifications, and when you are out of a service area for your carrier, you might consider turning your phone off to conserve battery power.
